Title: Bravely Default: Flying Fairy
Media: Video Game (3DS, Online)
Properties/Warnings: Cliche Plotline, Action, Humor, Angst, RPG, Adjustable Difficulty, Time Travel, Multiple Endings
Game Mechanics:
From what I know, Bravely Default is a fallback to a more preferred version of Final Fantasy's battle system. It allows the player to attack in a non-linear manner by allowing them to choose to save or stack turns.
I for one find the customization range of Bravely Default to be one of the most extensive I've encountered. The job system consists of 24 total jobs, each one with unique skills, stats, and weapon compatibility. EXP is earned for a job class, allowing the player to level up and learn the skills only for the job desired. For those who can't decide on one job, don't worry: you can change jobs at any time, in addition to being able to use abilities from two classes by setting a secondary job.
Players can change difficulty at any time without any repercussions, and can also completely turn off encounters in a similar manner. This can prove valuable in situations where you simply want to get from one place to another without being accosted.
Summary:
Bravely Default's plot is a compilation of fantasy video game archetypes. The story starts out in the land of Caldisla when an evil force rips open the earth to allow beasts and monsters of all kinds to run rampant across the world. The epicenter of this chasm is the hero's home. So soon after losing everything he holds dear, our hero Tiz comes across a beautiful young woman being attacked by a bizarre but powerful duo.
As it turns out, the girl's name is Agnes Oblige, and she is a holy woman who practices the national worship of the four elemental crystals. Those who were attacking her were agents of the kingdom of Eternia, the sole nation in the world to reject this doctrine known as Crystallism. Agnes reveals that the crystals became tainted with a powerful darkness at the same time the chasm opened, and that it is her duty as a vestal - a mouthpiece and purifier of the crystals - to find the source of the evil and cleanse it.
Thus begins the inevitable journey across the world to cleanse the crystals, beginning with Agnes' patron crystal of wind. Joining Tiz and Agnes are Ringabel, an amnesiac lecher, and Edea, an girl of the Eternian military who's come to realize how corrupt her nation has become.
Once the four crystals are finally purified, the crew advance upon the pillar of light that appears as a result, only to be teleported back to Caldisla to find all the previous good they'd done never even happened. Further analysis leads them to the conclusion that the pillar lead them to an alternate version of their world and that they must purify the crystals once more. This process happens several times until the foursome finally discovers the identity of the Big Baddy, a final boss who I will not reveal the name of. Obviously, the defeat of this final boss signals the end of the game.
Personal Notes:
Admittedly, Bravely Default is an incredibly cliche game, but I think the lovable characters more than make up for it. Plus, there's an unexpected twist at the end that caught me entirely off guard!
